Aluminium steerer tube

On the Salsa Waxwing Carbon, the fork itself is made of carbon,

but the steerer tube – that is, the vertical tube that fits into the frame and the headset – is made of aluminium.

Why is this the case?

• Stability & safety: Aluminium steerer tubes are highly resistant to clamping pressure from the stem and headset.

• Price & weight: The carbon-aluminium combination is lighter than steel, but cheaper than a full-carbon steerer tube.

• Compatibility: Many manufacturers prefer aluminium steerer tubes because they are less delicate and fit universally.
